Sachiko Hidari (born Sachiko Nukamura, June 29, 1930 – November 7, 2001) was a famous Japanese actress and film director. She was known for her strong performances in many movies. Sachiko Hidari also became one of the first women in Japan to direct a film while also acting in it.

Early Life and Career

Sachiko Hidari was born as Sachiko Nukamura in a town called Asahi, in Toyama, Japan. She was the oldest of eight children in her family. After finishing school, she went to the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education.

Her acting career began in 1952 with her first movie, Wakaki hi no ayamachi. From that time until 1995, Sachiko Hidari acted in more than 90 films. She worked with many important directors, including Tadashi Imai and Shōhei Imamura.

Awards and Achievements

Sachiko Hidari was a very talented actress, and she won many awards for her work. One of her biggest achievements was in 1964. She won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. This award was for her amazing roles in two films: She and He and The Insect Woman.

Directing Films

In 1977, Sachiko Hidari took on a new challenge. She directed a film called The Far Road, and she also starred in it. This was a very important step because it made her the first woman to both act in and direct a movie in Japan since Kinuyo Tanaka. Her film The Far Road was even shown at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival.

Besides movies, Sachiko Hidari also performed on stage in plays and appeared on television shows.

Personal Life

Sachiko Hidari was married to a film director named Susumu Hani. They were married from 1959 to 1977 and had one daughter named Mio Hani. Sachiko Hidari also had a sister, Tokie Hidari, who became an actress too.

Sachiko Hidari passed away in 2001. She left behind a great legacy in Japanese cinema.
