History and Design
The Sacred Heart Church has a stunning Gothic design. Its foundation stone was placed on March 25, 1874. Important church leaders, like Félix María Arrieta y Llano, who was the Bishop of Cadiz, and John Baptist Scandella, who was the Vicar Apostolic of Gibraltar, attended this special event.
Even though the first stone was laid in 1874, the church was not officially blessed until July 15, 1888. This blessing marked its formal opening for religious services.
Important People
Many priests have served at Sacred Heart Church over the years. One notable person was Charles Caruana. He was a parish priest at this church before he became the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar. He served as Bishop from 1998 to 2010.
Special Features
In the outdoor area, or patio, of the church, there is a special grotto. A grotto is a small cave-like structure. This grotto is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, which is a famous religious site in France. It is a peaceful spot for prayer and reflection.
