Latin | Os sacrum |
The sacrum is a special bone in your body. It's shaped like a triangle. You can find it at the very bottom of your spine. It also forms the upper and back part of your pelvis.
This bone fits like a wedge between your two hip bones. Its top part connects with the last bone of your lower back. This bone is called a lumbar vertebra. The bottom part of the sacrum connects with your coccyx (which is your tailbone). When you are young, these bones are separate. But as you grow, they slowly join together. This happens during the first half of your life.
The sacrum is curved inwards when you look at it from the front. It also tilts a bit forward. The sacrum connects with four other bones in your body:
- The last lumbar vertebra above it.
- The coccyx (tailbone) below it.
- The ilium part of your hip bone on both sides.
