The Roman Theatre of Sagunto is an amazing ancient theatre located in Sagunto, Spain. It's a very old building from the time of the Roman Empire. This theatre was built almost 2,000 years ago! In 1896, it was officially named a Bien de Interés Cultural, which means it's a super important historical site that needs to be protected.

Discovering the Roman Theatre of Sagunto

This incredible theatre sits at the bottom of a mountain. At the top of the mountain, you can see the Sagunto Castle. The theatre is built on a middle level, between the city and the castle. It was part of a big plan for the city during the time of Emperor Augustus.

Building this Ancient Wonder

The theatre was built in the middle of the first century AD. Builders used the natural slope of the mountain to help create its shape. This made it easier to build the many rows of seats.

Inside the Theatre: Seats and Stage

The Roman Theatre of Sagunto has two main parts. The first part is called the cavea. This is the semicircular area where the audience sat. It has three levels of seats, like giant steps.

The second part is the frons scaenae. This was the tall, decorated wall at the back of the stage. It was as high as the top of the seating area. The theatre is shaped like a half-circle and could hold about 8,000 people! Imagine all those people watching a play so long ago.
