A Look Back: The Church's Story

The St. Andrew's church group started in 1885. It was one of the first religious places built in the area now called the University–Cultural Center in Detroit. By January 1886, the group had already built a church at Fourth and Putnam streets.

In the early 1890s, architects from Boston, named Cram, Wentworth & Goodhue, designed the church we see today. There were some delays, but the church was finished in 1902.

In 1906, a fire caused by electricity damaged the church. It took six years to repair it. The repairs changed some of the original design. After World War II, many people moved away from the area. In 1961, the church group leased the building to Wayne State University for 99 years. The university now uses it as a chapel for students and a place for concerts.

What Does It Look Like?

St. Andrew's church shows off straight, strong lines. These lines are a special part of the style used by the architect, Ralph Adams Cram. The outside of the church is made from a light-colored stone called Bedford limestone. It has trimmings of another stone called Berea sandstone. There is not much fancy decoration on the outside stone.

Inside, you will see many large columns in the main part of the church. There is also a very big window behind the altar, which is the table used in church services.
