The Saint Anne's Hill Historic District is a special part of the city of Dayton, Ohio, in the United States. It's located within the Historic Inner East neighborhood. This area is famous for its many beautiful Victorian homes. These houses were built between about 1860 and the early 1900s.

Saint Anne's Hill has a rich German heritage. It was first planned out in 1802 by German immigrants. Today, the Stivers School for the Arts is also found in this historic district.

Discovering Saint Anne's Hill's History

This area was first officially recognized as a local historic neighborhood in 1974. The city of Dayton made it special with Ordinance #24688. Later, in 1986, Saint Anne's Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places important to American history.

The historic district covers about 14 city blocks. It includes 333 different properties, as of 2014. The boundaries of this special area are Fourth, McClure, Josie, High, and Dutoit Streets.

Exploring the Architecture

The buildings in Saint Anne's Hill show off different styles of architecture. You can see examples of Second Empire, Romanesque, and Queen Anne designs.

Two very famous buildings here are The Steamboat House and the Bossler Mansion. The Steamboat House is located at 6 Josie Street. The Bossler Mansion was built in 1869 and is at 136 S. Dutoit Street. Every two years, the neighborhood hosts tours of these old homes. Guides dress in Victorian costumes, and the money raised helps the local history group.

Parks and Green Spaces

Bomberger Park is a well-known park in Saint Anne's Hill. During the big Great Dayton Flood of 1913, boats even docked in Bomberger Park to help people escape. In the 1930s, the park had a cool wading pool with fancy columns. Those structures are not there anymore.

Today, Bomberger Park has lots of things to do. You can find tennis and basketball courts, a baseball field, a soccer field, and a playground. In 2012, the city sold the Bomberger Center building, which was built in 1956. It is now used by the Ahiska Turkish American Community Center of Dayton.

There are also several other smaller parks in the district. These include Fred's Park, Alice's Park, Terry Street Park, and Victorian Park.

Local Businesses and Shops

Since 2013, more and more small businesses have opened on 5th Street in Saint Anne's Hill. The Fifth Street Brewpub opened in 2013. It's a special kind of pub owned by its customers, called a co-op. This pub helped make the area a popular spot for new businesses.

In January 2018, the Gem City Catfé opened. It's a fun place where you can get coffee and drinks. You can also play with cats that are looking for new homes! After that, Harry's Collection, an antique store, opened in March 2018. In 2019, a bakery and café called St. Anne's the Tart also joined the neighborhood.
