Saint Arnaud Range facts for kids
The Saint Arnaud Range is a mountain range found in the central north of New Zealand's South Island. It sits between a beautiful lake called Lake Rotoiti and the upper parts of the Wairau River. This mountain range also forms the eastern edge of Nelson Lakes National Park.
At lower levels, the mountains are covered mostly with native beech forests. As you go higher up, above about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), the landscape changes to an alpine environment. This means it's a cold, rocky area with very few trees, similar to what you might find near the top of tall mountains.
The range was named after a French military leader, Marshal Jacques Leroy de Saint-Arnaud, who lived from 1798 to 1854.
