Saint Camillus Academy facts for kids
Saint Camillus Academy was a Catholic school in Corbin, Kentucky. It was started in 1908 by the Sisters of Divine Providence and the Diocese of Covington. The school first taught students from first grade through high school. It also had dorms for girls who lived there.
In 2012, the school closed its doors. The next year, in 2013, the building was sold to the Corbin Schools System. For a while, it was used as the Corbin Educational Center (CEC). This center helped students from Corbin, Williamsburg, and Whitley County. In 2015, the CEC moved, and the old Saint Camillus site became the new Corbin Middle School. The original building was planned to be taken down in 2016 to make way for the new school.

How the School Started
Early Days as Sacred Heart School
The school began in 1908 as Sacred Heart School. It was a parish school, meaning it was run by the local church. The Sisters of Divine Providence helped to set it up.
Becoming Saint Camillus Academy
In 1913, the Sisters of Divine Providence took over running the school. At this time, its name changed to Saint Camillus Academy. A new building was built, and a high school program was added.
Growing and Changing Programs
By 1972, the school had about 300 students from first grade to twelfth grade. A second building was built to help with the growing number of students. In 1985, a kindergarten program was added for younger kids. Later, in 1996, a Montessori preschool program started. At the same time, the high school program was closed.

First Buildings and Changes
When the school first opened, it was in a rented house on Laurel Street. In 1914, the school bought a large piece of land, about 35 acres. The first permanent school building was finished in May 1915. An extra part was added in 1921. This annex included a chapel and a library.
After a new building was built in 1973, the older building was still used for classes and as a place for people to live. However, the building from 1914 was taken down in June 2008.
Modern Campus Features
The campus later had two main buildings, a pavilion, and special areas for environmental science. These environmental facilities were so good that the school was named a 2009 PRIDE Campus of the Year. The PRIDE program helps schools with environmental projects.
With help from the PRIDE program, Saint Camillus Academy created some cool outdoor spaces. These included two wetlands, a butterfly garden, a greenhouse, and a nature trail. They also had two "tracking boxes" for studying animals.
Fun Activities and Learning
Students at Saint Camillus Academy took part in many exciting academic challenges. These activities helped them learn and compete with other schools.
