Saint Gwrfyw facts for kids
Saint Gwrfyw was an important religious figure from a long time ago in Wales. He lived during the Middle Ages, a period of history that lasted from about the 5th to the 15th century. He was considered a saint even before the modern church system was fully organized.
Who Was Saint Gwrfyw?
Saint Gwrfyw was the son of a person named Pasgen ab Urien Rheged. His family was also connected to Coel Godhebog, another historical figure. Gwrfyw was the father of another well-known Welsh saint, Saint Nidan.
Some old writings mention that Saint Gwrfyw had two brothers, named Mydan and Llamined. Certain important families in Wales believed they were related to these brothers.
His Work and Legacy
It is believed that a church was built and named after Saint Gwrfyw in Anglesey, an island off the coast of Wales. However, the exact location of this church is not known today. There was also once a small chapel called Capel Gorfyw in Bangor, but it disappeared a long time ago.
The only written proof we have of Saint Gwrfyw is his name appearing as a witness on a document about a land deal in Monmouthshire. This shows he was a real person who lived and was involved in important events of his time.
