The St. Luke's Home for Destitute and Aged Women was a special place in Middletown, Connecticut. It was created to provide a comfortable home for older women who needed support. The idea for the home officially started on June 22, 1865, when the state of Connecticut approved it.
For 27 years, the home was located in an older house. But in 1892, a generous gift of money allowed a brand-new building to be built. This new home, located at Pearl and Lincoln Streets, was designed to be a cozy place for up to 14 women. People from the Church of the Holy Trinity played a big part in setting up the money to keep the home running. Often, the church's leader would also be the head of the group that managed the home.
A Look at the Building
The St. Luke's Home is a large building made of brick. It was designed to look more like a fancy apartment building than a typical institution. It stands three-and-a-half stories tall, with part of the first floor slightly below ground.
Special Features
To enter the building, you walk up a long set of steps made of brownstone, leading to the main door on the second floor. On either side of the entrance, there are two large bay windows that stick out from the building. Above the roof, you can see decorative dormer windows with pointed roofs.
The building also has many pretty details. There's a decorative wrought iron fence, and ivy grows on the outside walls. The corners of the building have special brick designs that make it look even more charming.
Location and Importance
This large brick building stands out in the area because of its size and its location on a corner at Pearl and Lincoln Streets. This part of Middletown is mostly residential, meaning it's where people live.
The St. Luke's Home acts like a landmark. To its south, towards Washington Street, you'll find other large buildings. To its north, there are smaller, older homes where workers lived during the late Victorian era.
