Journey of the Painting
This painting, Saint Luke, has traveled quite a bit! It was originally kept in a church in a town called Almadrones in Spain. During a time of conflict, it was moved for safety to a fort in Guadalajara.
Later, it went to the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid for special care and cleaning. After its restoration, it was returned to the church's ownership. In 1952, the painting was sold and brought to the United States.
It was bought by Dr. G.H.A. Clowes, a collector in Indianapolis. Since 1958, it has been part of The Clowes Fund Collection. This collection is now displayed at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
