A Look at Its History
The Start of St. Patrick Parish
The story of this building begins with St. Patrick Parish. This church community started in 1862. It was created because many Irish Catholic families were moving to Detroit at that time.
Growth and New Names
By 1880, St. Patrick Parish had grown a lot. It became one of Detroit's largest and wealthiest church groups. In 1890, the parish changed its name to "Sts. Peter and Paul." To help educate the children in the community, a school building was built on Parsons Street in 1892.
Years as a School
The school opened its doors in 1893. It served as a school for both boys and girls in grade school. It also had a high school just for girls. This continued until 1969. In 1938, the parish went back to its original name, St. Patrick. The high school was then called "Immaculata High School." Later, it was renamed "Girls’ Catholic Central High School." The grade school became "St. Patrick’s Grade School." Both schools kept these names until they closed in 1969.
Becoming a Senior Center
After the school closed, the building was empty for three years. Then, it reopened as the "St. Patrick Senior Center." This organization is still active today. It helps older adults by providing hot meals, health care, and help with transportation. They also offer educational classes. The center works closely with the St. Patrick Church next door.
