Sak Kʼukʼ, also known as Muwaan Mat, Lady Sak Kʼukʼ, or Lady Beastie, was an important queen of the ancient Maya city-state of Palenque. She became the ruler in October 612 and ruled until 615. She was the mother of Kʼinich Janaab Pakal I, who became one of Palenque's most famous rulers. Sak Kʼukʼ died in 640.
Becoming Queen of Palenque
Sak Kʼukʼ was a powerful queen of Palenque, an ancient Maya city. Her father was named Janahb Pakal. Her mother might have been Yohl Ikʼnal, but this is not fully certain.
Her father, Janahb Pakal, did not have any sons who could take over as ruler. Because of this, Sak Kʼukʼ became the queen. She took the throne on October 19, 612. This happened just a few months after her father passed away.
Her Son's Reign
Sak Kʼukʼ ruled Palenque for a few years. Then, when her son, Kʼinich Janaab Pakal I, was old enough, he became the new ruler. This happened on a date that Maya people recorded as 9.9.2.4.8 5 Lamat 1 Mol.
Even after her son became king, Sak Kʼukʼ still had a lot of power and influence in Palenque. She helped guide the city during the early years of her son's rule. For example, her name is written on her son Pakal's special stone coffin lid. This shows that she was the ruler who celebrated an important event called the "sealing of the Kʼatun" on January 25, 633 AD. A Kʼatun is a period of 20 years in the Maya calendar.
It is also thought that Sak Kʼukʼ was the mother of another person named Ajen Yohl Mat.
