Life of Janahb Pakal
Janahb Pakal's exact family role in the Palenque royal line is not fully clear. He may have been the grandfather or brother of another ruler named Ajen Yohl Mat. It seems he never became the main king of Palenque himself.
Family Connections
Janahb Pakal was the father of Lady Sak Kʼukʼ. She was one of the few queens who ruled in her own right in Maya history. His wife or mother was Lady Yohl Ikʼnal.
Palenque Under Attack
During the time his probable brother, Ajen Yohl Mat, was ruling, Palenque faced a big challenge. On April 4, 611, the city was attacked by Scroll Serpent. He was the ruler of the Kaan kingdom, also known as Calakmul. Both Janahb Pakal and Ajen Yohl Mat died about sixteen months after this attack.
Legacy and Confusion
Later on, Janahb Pakal was given a full "emblem glyph," which was a special symbol for important rulers. It is important not to confuse him with his grandson, K'inich Janaab Pakal I. His grandson ruled for a very long time, about 68 years. K'inich Janaab Pakal I was responsible for building or expanding many famous structures and writings in Palenque that we can still see today.
