Salamina is a charming town and municipality in the Colombian department of Caldas. It is located in the northern part of the department. Salamina also includes a smaller area called San Felix.
This special town was founded in 1825 by Fermin Lopez, Francisco Marulanda, and other pioneers. Salamina is famous for two cool nicknames. It's known as the "City of Light" because many talented poets, musicians, actors, and writers have come from here. It's also called the "Mother of Nations." This is because it was a starting point for people who went on to found other important cities. These include Neira, Aranzazu, Manizales, Santa Rosa de Cabal, Pereira, and Armenia. Salamina officially became a municipality in 1861.
Today, about 20,000 people live in Salamina. The town covers an area of about 40,354 hectares. The average temperature is around 22 °C (71.6 °F), which is quite pleasant. The main ways people make a living here are by growing coffee, producing dairy products, and raising livestock.
Salamina was recognized as a Pueblo Patrimonio (heritage town) of Colombia in 2010. This means it's a special place with important history and culture. It's the only town in the Eje Cafetero (Coffee Cultural Landscape) chosen for this special program. In 2011, the town was also named part of the "Coffee Cultural Landscape" UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a big deal, as it means the town's unique coffee culture and natural beauty are protected globally.
