Salazar de las Palmas is a cool town and municipality in Colombia. It's located in the Norte de Santander Department. A municipality is like a local government area, similar to a county or a large town.

What's in a Name?
The name "Salazar" comes from a person named Alonso Pérez de Salazar. He was an "oidor," which was an important judge in the old Spanish government. The second part, "Las Palmas," means "The Palms." This is because when the town was first built, there were lots of palm trees around!
A Look Back in Time
Salazar de las Palmas was founded way back in 1583 by Captain Alonso Esteban Rangel. It was an important spot because it helped people get to the Magdalena River. This river was a major travel route in the old New Kingdom of Granada. The town also helped create a new border with the Motilones natives.
Amazing Old Buildings
Salazar de las Palmas has some really old and interesting buildings.
San Pablo Parish Church
The main church, called San Pablo Parish, started being built in 1889. It was finished and blessed in 1915. Imagine how much work went into building such a big church over many years! It has a modern style for its time.
Belén Chapel
There's also a very old chapel called Belén Chapel. It's made from traditional materials like adobe. One of its towers was damaged by an earthquake in 1875. Inside, there's a special altar piece of Our Lady of Belén. People believe a woman named Lucía found the statue in a creek back in the 1600s!

Santurbán Regional Natural Park
A big part of the Santurban Regional Natural Park in Salazar de las Palmas
is in this municipality. This park covers about 19,088 hectares. That's a huge area of protected land! It's a great place to see nature.Lakes and Lagoons
The municipality also has several pretty lagoons, like Los Bueyes, Peroneo, and Triaca. These are natural lakes. Salazar is part of the northern lagoon complex of Cáchira. This area includes parts of other nearby towns too. The Regional Natural Park was officially created in 2013 to protect this special natural area.
