Early Life and Photography Start
Salimah Ali was born in 1954 in Harlem, New York City. She grew up in different parts of New York, like Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Her dad was an oil painter, and he helped her love art from a young age. He even bought her first camera!

She saw a poster for a concert by the singer Eddie Kendricks. Salimah bravely asked the concert promoter if she could photograph the show. They said yes! This opened the door for her to photograph many other famous musicians. These included Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Bob Marley.
Later, Salimah went to the Fashion Institute of Technology. There, she earned a special degree in photography.
