The Salisbury Academy Building is a very old and important building in Salisbury, New Hampshire. It stands at 9 Old Coach Road. Built way back in 1796, this building has had many different jobs. It was a public school, a private school, and a meeting place for the local Grange chapter. Today, it is used for town offices. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

What is the Salisbury Academy Building?

The Salisbury Academy Building is in the center of Salisbury village. You can find it where Franklin Road and Old Coach Road meet. It is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof. The outside is covered with clapboard siding.

A Look Inside the Building

The building was first built as a simple rectangle. But in 1883, its top floor was made bigger. This was done to turn the classrooms upstairs into one large meeting room. This part of the building now hangs over the front, supported by posts.

Under this overhang, there are three doors. The two doors on the left open into small entryways. From these, you can enter what used to be a classroom on the first floor. The left entryway also has a small bathroom. The door on the right leads to a short hallway. From this hall, stairs go up to the big meeting room on the top floor.

A Building with Many Lives

This two-story wooden building was constructed in 1796. It was first used as a private school for higher education. In 1806, the town bought the building. They moved it from Salisbury Heights to where it stands today.

Until about 1865, the building was mainly used by the private academy. However, a public district school also met on the ground floor. From 1884 to 1965, the building was mostly used by the local Grange. The Grange is a community organization for farmers and their families. Now, the Salisbury Academy Building is home to the town offices.
