Salko Bukvarević (born 20 April 1967 – died 29 July 2020) was an important politician and soldier from Bosnia. He served as the Federal Minister for Veterans and Disabled Veterans. This role meant he helped people who had served in the army, especially those who were injured.

In 1990, Salko Bukvarević helped start a political group called the Party of Democratic Action. During the Bosnian War, he was part of the Bosnian army. He also helped create a special army unit called the Patriotic League. After the war, he worked in many different jobs. He became the Minister for Veterans and Disabled Veterans on 31 March 2015. He held this job until he passed away on 29 July 2020, because of problems from COVID-19.

Early Life and Education

Salko Bukvarević was born on 20 April 1967. His hometown was Gornje Hrasno, near Kalesija. At that time, this area was part of a country called Yugoslavia.

In 1986, he finished high school in a city called Tuzla. He loved learning and continued his studies at university. In 1996, he earned his first degree in Mining-Geological-Civil Engineering. He then went on to get a Master's degree in 2004 and a Doctorate in 2011. He was married and had two children.

Serving in the Army

From 1992 to 1995, Salko Bukvarević was a soldier in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was one of the people who helped create the Patriotic League. This was a special army unit. For his bravery and service, he received the unit's gold medal.

Working in Politics

Salko Bukvarević was one of the first people to help start the Party of Democratic Action in 1990. This was an important political party. From 1996 to 1999, he was a member of the party's main leadership group.

He also held several other important jobs. From 1995 to 1998, he worked as a secretary for the party in the Tuzla Canton area. A canton is like a region or state. Then, from 1998 to 2007, he was the director of a public cultural center in Tuzla. From 2007 to 2010, he was a representative in the Tuzla Canton Assembly. This meant he helped make decisions for the region.

Becoming a Minister

On 31 March 2015, Salko Bukvarević was chosen for a very important job. He became the Federal Minister for Veterans and Disabled Veterans. In this role, he worked to support and help people who had served in the military, especially those who were injured or had special needs.

In 2016, some groups of former soldiers protested. They asked Bukvarević to step down from his job. They wanted him to solve problems for veterans and their families. Bukvarević said he would not resign. He explained that the protesting groups represented only a small number of all veterans.

His Passing

On 22 July 2020, Salko Bukvarević became sick with COVID-19. This was during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His health got worse, and he needed help breathing with a machine on 28 July. Sadly, he passed away on 29 July at a hospital in Sarajevo. On 1 August, he was buried in a mosque in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
