Sallie Ann Glassman was born in 1954 in Kennebunkport, Maine. She is an American artist, writer, and a practitioner of Vodou. Vodou is a spiritual practice with roots in West Africa.

Glassman has been involved with Vodou in New Orleans since 1977. In 1995, she completed a traditional Haitian initiation. This made her one of the few white Americans to be initiated in this way. She owns a special place called Island of Salvation Botanica. This place is an art gallery that also sells religious items. It features both Haitian and local artworks. Many people see Glassman as one of New Orleans' most well-known Vodou practitioners.

Glassman's Art and Tarot Cards

Sallie Ann Glassman creates art that is both spiritual and combines different traditions. She has made two main types of tarot card decks. Tarot cards are a set of cards used for spiritual readings.

The Enochian Tarot

One of her decks is called the Enochian Tarot. This deck is based on an old magical system. This system was created by Doctor John Dee, an English magician from the Elizabethan era.

The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot

Glassman also created the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot. This deck is special because it changes the usual tarot suits. Instead, it shows spirits from different Vodou traditions. These include Petro, Congo, and Rada, as well as Santería practices.

In 1992, Glassman published this New Orleans Voodoo Tarot deck. The cards were unique for their time because they showed black people. The cards feature important spirits like Obatala, Oshun, Ogun, Yemaya, and Shango. They also include classic Haitian Vodou spirits such as Damballah-Wedo, Ezili-Freda, and Guede. Famous priests from Louisiana Voodoo like Marie Laveau and Dr. John are also shown.

A book came with the tarot cards. Glassman wrote this book with Louis Martinié. He was a supporter of the New Orleans style of Voodoo.
