Sally Bush (born October 29, 1860 – died November 3, 1946) was an American photographer. She was also known for her quiet kindness and generosity. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, she helped many hungry people. Sally also welcomed guests to her family home, Bush House, in Salem, Oregon, USA.

Early Life and Education

Sally Bush was born in Salem, Oregon. Her parents were Asahel Bush and Eugenia Zieber. She was the third of their four children. Sadly, her mother died in 1863 when Sally was almost three years old.

Sally went to Sacred Heart Academy in Salem. She then graduated from high school at Moravian Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After attending Martha Burnham school, she finished her studies at Smith College in 1883.

While still in college, Sally helped her father. She chose wallpaper and other items for their new home in Salem. She also managed the money for the house. The Bush residence was finished in 1887.

Life at Bush House

For the next 30 years, Sally was the main hostess at Bush House. She welcomed many guests from Salem. She also entertained her father's business friends and political contacts.

Sally was a loving caretaker of the home. She hosted her father's dinner parties. She also loved gardening. She grew flowers in the new conservatory near the house. She managed the vegetable gardens and fruit trees. Sally also loved animals. She cared for cows and other farm animals. She especially cared for dogs and cats that people left at her doorstep. She made sure every animal had a home.

Sally was very generous but did not show it off. She often helped young writers and artists start their careers. She sometimes even paid for their training. Sally was a vegetarian, meaning she did not eat meat. However, she offered fish, chicken, or meat to her guests. She also provided many vegetable dishes. Sally was a member of the Salem Garden Club and the Unitarian Church.

In 1909, Sally bought an electric car. It was a Baker electric car. But after her first drive, she stopped driving it herself. She accidentally drove it through the front window of a local pharmacy! After that, chauffeurs drove the car for her.

By 1912, Sally had become an important person at the Ladd and Bush bank. Her father had started this bank. She became the vice president.

Photography Skills

Sally Bush was a very skilled photographer. Her brother, A. N. Bush, was also a good photographer. The Salem Public Library has over 2,200 of their photos. More than half of these were taken by Sally. Some of her photos were made using glass plate negatives.

She took pictures of her friends and family. She also captured images of Bush House, its gardens, and the conservatory. She took both formal portraits and natural, everyday photos.

Her Lasting Impact

Sally Bush is remembered as a kind and caring woman. She was always ready to help families who needed food or clothes. She focused much of her generosity on helping others quietly.

To honor her, the Bush House Museum holds an annual Sally Bush Memorial Food Drive. This event works with the "Women Ending Hunger" campaign. This campaign is part of the Marion-Polk Food Share.

Sally has also been honored for taking care of Bush's Pasture Park and Historic Deepwood Estate. An art show at the Bush Barn Art Center, called Parks for People: Lord and Schryver's Legacy, celebrated her efforts.
