Early Life and Dreams

Sally Genevieve Hansen was born in 1908 in Kansas City, Kansas. Her parents, Thomas and Jennie Finney, owned a small makeup company called La Finné. When Sally was a teenager, she decided to follow her dreams. She left home and moved to Hollywood, California, to become a dancer. She even got roles in stage shows and movies like The Orpheus Four and Friendly Enemies.

During the 1920s, a time known as the "Roaring Twenties" because of all the exciting changes and new styles, Sally was a big part of the Hollywood social scene.

A Creative Career

Becoming a Writer

While Sally was busy dancing and acting in Hollywood, she also had a talent for writing. She wrote a newspaper column for the Los Angeles Times called "Your Candid Mirror." She used her maiden name, Sally Finney, for these articles. In her 91 articles, Sally shared beauty tips and advice on how to live well. She always encouraged women to feel good about themselves and be confident in their own skin.

Starting Businesses

House of Hollywood

After her dancing career, Sally took over her parents' makeup company, which wasn't doing very well. She worked with her husband and brother to make it new again, calling it "House of Hollywood." By the early 1940s, House of Hollywood grew to be very large, becoming the biggest private makeup company in Southern California. Sally was even chosen to be the first female president of the California Cosmetics Association!

Sally's success with House of Hollywood led to new opportunities. A big store chain, S. H. Kress & Co., wanted her to create products for them under the name La Bonita. She invented "Cool Off," a makeup designed not to melt in the heat, and "Film Tone," inspired by the makeup used in movies.

Sally Hansen, Inc.

In 1946, Sally decided to leave House of Hollywood and start her very own beauty company in New York City. She named it "Sally Hansen Inc.," and its logo looked just like her own signature! Her first two famous products were "Hard As Nails" and "Mend-A-Nail," both for taking care of nails. Sally was a strong supporter of women in the workplace, and most of the people she hired in her factory were women.

Sally sold her company in 1962. Over time, Sally Hansen became the most popular nail brand in the United States. By 2017, you could find Sally Hansen products in more than 55 countries around the world!

Personal Life

Sally Hansen was married three times during her life.

Her first marriage was at age 19 to Eugene Gunther. They later divorced in 1929.

On November 20, 1932, Sally married Adolf M. Hansen, who was a doctor. They had a fun and exciting life together, often going to parties. However, Sally's big dreams for her career were even bigger than his, and they divorced in 1946.

In 1947, Sally married for the third time to Jack Newton.

Later Years

Sally Hansen passed away on December 16, 1963, at the age of 55. She had been ill for about six months. Her grave is a simple, flat stone at Rose Hills Memorial Park in California.

When Sally Hansen sold her company in 1962, she received a lot of money. After she passed away, most of her remaining money went to her husband, Jack Newton.
