Salme Pekkala-Dutt (born Salme Anette Murrik; August 29, 1888 – August 30, 1964) was an Estonian-British political figure. She was known for her work with the communist movement and was married to Rajani Palme Dutt, another important communist leader.

Salme was born in a place called Helme Parish in what was then the Russian Empire. Today, this area is part of Estonia. She grew up in Valga.

Early Life and Education

When Salme was young, she attended the A.S. Pushkin Gymnasium in Tartu. However, she was asked to leave the school because she took part in the Revolution of 1905. This was a time when many people in Russia protested against the government.

After leaving school, Salme traveled a lot. She lived in places like Moscow, Siberia, and Finland. Eventually, she moved to Britain. Her first husband was a Finnish politician named Eino Pekkala.

Joining the Communist Party

Salme Pekkala-Dutt played an important role in the early days of the Communist Party of Great Britain. She was sent to Britain by Lenin, a famous leader, to help create this new political party. She helped connect the party in Britain with leaders in Moscow.

Her Writings

Salme Pekkala-Dutt was also a writer. In 1939, she published a book called When England Arose. This book was about the Chartist movement, which was a group of working-class people in Britain who fought for more rights in the 1800s.

After she passed away, a collection of her poems was published in London in 1966. The book was called Lucifer and Other Poems. Salme Pekkala-Dutt died in London in 1964.
