The Salt Lake passenger station, Los Angeles
Salt Lake Station, 1920

Salt Lake Station was an important train station in Los Angeles, California. It was located near the Los Angeles River on 1st Street. This station served as a busy hub for train travel for many years.

What Was Salt Lake Station?

Salt Lake Station was a building where people could catch trains. It was built to help connect Los Angeles with other cities by rail. The station was a key part of the city's transportation system in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Building the Station

The station was first built by a company called the Los Angeles Terminal Railway. It opened its doors and started serving passengers in 1891. This made it one of the newer train stations in the area at the time.

A Busy Hub

Over the years, the station became part of larger railway networks. In 1901, it joined the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. Later, in 1921, it became part of the even bigger Union Pacific Railroad system. This meant more trains and more people passing through the station. People could also use local streetcars to get to and from the station. The Los Angeles Railway provided these streetcar services.

The End of an Era

Sadly, Salt Lake Station faced a big challenge in 1924. A fire caused a lot of damage to the building. Because of this, the railroad decided to move all passenger services. Trains started using Southern Pacific's Central Station instead. Salt Lake Station was no longer used for passengers after the fire.
