Salvador Giner i de San Julián (born February 10, 1934 – died October 19, 2019) was a famous Spanish sociologist. A sociologist is someone who studies how people live together in groups and societies. He was also the president of the Institute of Catalan Studies from 2005 to 2013. This institute is a very important place for studying Catalan culture and science.

Salvador Giner's Life and Work

Salvador Giner studied at some of the world's top universities. He earned his PhD (a very high academic degree) from the University of Chicago in the United States. He also took advanced courses at the University of Cologne in Germany.

Teaching and Research

In 1989, Salvador Giner became a professor of Sociology at the University of Barcelona in Spain. He taught there until 2004. But his teaching wasn't limited to Spain! He taught in many different countries around the world.

Important Roles and Contributions

Salvador Giner was a member of the Institute of Catalan Studies starting in 1995. He also helped create the Catalan Association of Sociology in 1979 and was its first president. This association works closely with the Institute of Catalan Studies.

He was also one of the people who helped start the European Association of Sociology. This group connects sociologists from all over Europe.

From 1969 to 1975, he was a director and teacher at the Universitat Catalana d'Estiu (Catalan Summer University). He also founded and directed the Institute of Social Advanced Studies, which is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Salvador Giner was an editor and advisor for the Great Catalan Encyclopedia. This is a huge collection of knowledge about Catalonia. He also worked with many other national and international magazines and journals.

In 1995, the Generalitat of Catalonia (the regional government of Catalonia) honored him with the Saint George Cross. This is one of the highest awards given in Catalonia.
