Joining the AFL: The Draft
Sam was chosen to play for the Brisbane Lions in the 2006 AFL Draft. The AFL Draft is like a special event where teams pick new players from younger leagues. It's how many young athletes get their start in professional football. Sam also had the chance to join the Carlton Football Club. This was because his dad played for Carlton, and there's a special rule called the 'Father-son rule' that allows teams to pick players whose fathers played for them.
Sam's Family and Football
Sam's dad is Ken Sheldon, who was also a famous Australian rules footballer. Ken played for two teams, Carlton and St Kilda. He was a very successful player and helped Carlton win three big championships, called premierships, in 1979, 1981, and 1982.
