In 2014, she won a gold medal for herself and a silver medal with her team at the World Championships. By 2015, Samantha was ranked number one in the world for Modern Pentathlon. She achieved this after winning a World Cup event in the USA. She also finished 8th at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

Samantha's Early Life and Sports Beginnings

Samantha Murray was born in Preston, Lancashire, England. She grew up in a town called Clitheroe. As a young girl, she went to Brookside Primary School. Later, she attended Bowland High School.

Discovering a Love for Swimming and Running

When Samantha was seven, she joined the Clitheroe Dolphins Swimming Club. She loved competing in local swimming events. Through her swimming club, she was asked to try a local Modern Biathlon. This sport combines two events: running and swimming. Samantha quickly discovered she was good at running. She decided to focus on running at a higher level.

Becoming an Athletics Star

At age 11, Samantha started training for athletics. She joined the Hyndburn Athletics Club. In her first season, in 2001, she won the Lancashire County Championships. She won for both Cross Country and the 1500 metres race. She continued to run for Lancashire and competed in big school events. In 2006, she moved to the Blackburn Harriers Athletes Club. Samantha looked up to British runner Kelly Holmes. Kelly's success at the 2004 Summer Olympics really inspired Samantha.

Learning to Ride and Fence

From the time she was born, Samantha was around horses. Her grandparents had a small farm in Longton, Lancashire. She spent many weekends and school holidays with the horses. She also competed in riding events from a young age. Samantha then joined the Ribble Valley Modern Pentathlon Team. This is where she started learning to shoot a pistol. After that, she went to a fencing club in Bolton and really enjoyed it. With these new skills, she was ready to compete in her first full Modern Pentathlon.

An Olympic Dream Begins

At the fencing club, Samantha saw a poster of Steph Cook. Steph had won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Seeing this poster made Samantha dream of winning an Olympic medal herself. She had always wanted to compete in the Olympics. Samantha became the National Youth Champion in Modern Pentathlon for several years in a row. She also won many international junior competitions.

Samantha took a break from sports while she studied for her A-Levels. She attended CRGS sixth form during this time.

Samantha's Amazing Career Achievements

Samantha competed in the Junior World Championships and Junior European Championships in 2010. Her British team won gold medals in both events! Individually, she finished 8th in the World competition. She placed 15th overall in the European event.

First Senior Competitions

The team earned a silver medal, finishing in second place. Samantha herself placed 22nd in the individual competition.

Winning World Cup Medals

In March 2012, Samantha finished sixth at a World Cup event in Charlotte, North Carolina. After that, she won the Budapest Cup. Her first World Cup medal came in Rostov, Russia, in April 2012. She won a bronze medal, coming in third place. She had been leading the competition on the final day. However, she was overtaken during the combined running and shooting event.

Olympic Glory in London

Samantha Murray and Mhairi Spence were chosen to represent Great Britain. They were the two female modern pentathlon competitors for their country. Samantha went on to win the silver medal in the very last event of the games! This was a huge achievement for her and her country.
