Dr. Samira Ibrahim Islam is a very important scientist from Saudi Arabia. She studies how medicines work in the body. This field is called pharmacology. She leads a special team at King Fahd Medical Research Center. This center is part of King Abdulaziz University. Dr. Islam also played a huge role in making sure girls in Saudi Arabia could go to university.
Growing Up and Going to School
Samira Islam was born in a place called al-Hafuf in Saudi Arabia. After finishing high school, she traveled to Egypt to continue her studies. She first started at the Medical School at Alexandria University. But after one year, she decided to switch to the School of Pharmacy.
At the School of Pharmacy, she worked very hard. She earned her first degree in pharmacy in 1964. Then, she got her Master's degree in 1966. Dr. Islam kept studying pharmacology and made history. In 1970, she became the first Saudi woman to earn a PhD degree.
Her Amazing Career
In 1971, Dr. Islam started teaching at King Abdulaziz University. Two years later, in 1973, she became an Academic Advisor. She helped guide the girls' sections of the university in Makkah and Jeddah. She worked very hard to create formal university education for women in Saudi Arabia.
In 1974, she became the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. This was a big step! Then, in 1983, she was made a Professor of Pharmacology. She was the first person from Saudi Arabia to achieve this high rank.
Dr. Islam also strongly supported the nursing profession. She helped start the first faculty of nursing in Saudi Arabia in 1976. This was a huge achievement for healthcare in the country.
Important Research
Dr. Islam has done a lot of research on how medicines affect people in Saudi Arabia. This is called drug metabolism. She started and still leads the Drug Monitoring Unit. This unit is part of the King Fahd Medical Research Center at King Abdulaziz University. She also serves on the board of the Arab Science and Technology Foundation.
For her important work, Dr. Islam received a Makkah Award of Excellence. This award recognized her research on how medicines impact Saudis.
