Samira Ibrahim Islam is a famous scientist from Saudi Arabia. She studies how medicines work and how they affect people. This field is called pharmacology. Dr. Islam leads a special team at King Abdulaziz University that checks how medicines are used. She also played a very important part in making sure women in Saudi Arabia could go to university.
Early Life and Learning
Samira Islam was born in a place called al-Hafuf, in al-Ahsaa, Saudi Arabia. After finishing high school, she went to Egypt to continue her studies. She first started at the Medical School of the University of Alexandria. But after one year, she moved to the School of Pharmacy.
There, she earned her first degree in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1964. She then got her Master's degree in 1966. Dr. Islam kept studying pharmacology and made history in 1970. She became the very first Saudi woman to earn a PhD degree!
Her Amazing Career
In 1971, Dr. Islam started teaching at King Abdulaziz University. She was chosen to be an Academic Advisor in 1973. This meant she helped guide the girls' sections of the university in Makkah and Jeddah. She worked hard to create proper university education for Saudi women.
In 1974, she became the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. This was a big step! Then, in 1983, she was named a Professor of Pharmacology. She was the first person from Saudi Arabia to achieve this high position.
Dr. Islam also strongly supported the nursing profession. In 1976, she helped start the first nursing school in Saudi Arabia. This made it possible for many more people to become nurses.
Her Research Work
Dr. Islam has studied how different medicines affect people in Saudi Arabia. This is called drug metabolism. She started and now leads the Drug Monitoring Unit. This special unit is part of the King Fahd Medical Research Center at King Abdulaziz University.
She is also a member of the board for the Arab Science and Technology Foundation. This group helps promote science and technology in Arab countries.
Dr. Islam received a special Makkah Award of Excellence. She got this award for her important research. Her work helped us understand how medicines affect Saudi people.
