The Samuel Caldwell House: A Historic Home

Meet Samuel Caldwell

Samuel Caldwell's father, Robert Caldwell, was the first person to settle in this area in 1809. Robert was a surveyor, someone who measures land. His son, Samuel, later took over the family farm.

Samuel worked hard to make his farm grow. He built a gristmill, which grinds grain into flour, and a sawmill, which cuts wood. These mills were important for the community.

How Caldwell Village Began

In 1851, Noble County was created. It was the last county to be formed in Ohio. Soon after, the county needed a place for its main offices, called a county seat.

Samuel Caldwell agreed to give some of his land for this purpose. In 1857, part of his farm was chosen as the new county seat. The new village was named Caldwell, after Samuel himself! His family continued to own and work on the rest of the farm until the 1920s.

About the House Itself

The Samuel Caldwell House was built in 1832. It is made of brick and sits on a strong stone foundation. The house has two stories.

The main part of the house is shaped like a rectangle. Later, a wooden addition was built onto the back of the house. The house's style is not one specific type, but it shows how homes were built a long time ago.

A Special Place in History

In 1980, the Samuel Caldwell House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States that are worth protecting. The house was recognized for two main reasons:

  • It played a big part in local history.
  • It was the home of a very important person in the community.

Four smaller buildings on the property were also recognized as historic. The Caldwell House is important because it shows how many early towns in Ohio started. Often, a large farm would donate land to create a new community.

The Samuel Caldwell House is one of nine places in Noble County on the National Register. It is also one of two in Caldwell. The other is the building that used to be the county jail and sheriff's office.
