Samuel Cartwright (born 1788 – died 10 June 1864) was a very famous British dentist. He was known for his amazing skills and for helping to make dentistry a respected profession.

Early Life and Dental Career

Samuel Cartwright was born in High Holborn, London, in 1788. He started his career working with ivory. This meant he was skilled at shaping ivory, which was often used to make artificial teeth, also known as dentures, at the time.

He began working as an assistant to Charles Dumergue. Mr. Dumergue was a well-known dentist who even treated King George IV. This early experience helped Samuel Cartwright learn a lot about dentistry.

Becoming a Top Dentist

In 1811, Samuel Cartwright opened his own dental practice. It was located at 32 Old Burlington Street in London. He quickly became one of the best dentists of his time. People admired his quick thinking and his incredible skill with his hands.

He was very dedicated to his work. For many months, he would see between forty and fifty patients every day. He often stood from seven in the morning until seven in the evening. Even with so many patients, he never seemed rushed or tired.

Improving the Dental Profession

Samuel Cartwright did a lot to improve dentistry. He helped make it a more respected and professional field. For several years, he earned a very high income, showing how successful he was.

He was also recognized by important scientific groups. He became a member of the Linnean Society in 1833. In 1841, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very high honor for scientists. He was also a member of the Geological Society. Even though he was busy, his friendly nature and professional fame helped him become friends with many important people in science and art.

Later Years

Samuel Cartwright continued working at his practice until 1857, when he retired. The next year, he had a stroke, which caused him to be paralyzed for the rest of his life. He passed away at his home near Tonbridge on 10 June 1864.
