The Samuel Copeland House is a special old house in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is located at 31 Harvard Street. This house was built around 1847. It is famous for its beautiful Greek Revival style.

This house is one of only two in Worcester that has a full "temple front." This means it looks like an ancient Greek temple. The Samuel Copeland House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 5, 1980. This list helps protect important historical places.

What the Samuel Copeland House Looks Like

The Samuel Copeland House is on the edge of downtown Worcester. It is a two-and-a-half-story wooden house. The outside is covered with overlapping wooden boards, called clapboards. The roof slopes down on two sides, facing the front of the house.

The most striking part is its large front porch, called a portico. This portico goes up two stories. It is held up by four tall, fancy columns. These columns have grooves, called flutes, and decorated tops in the Corinthian style.

Above the portico is a triangular part of the roof, known as a pedimented gable. It has a window decorated with leaf-like designs. Other windows on the front of the house have fancy tops. The corners of the building also have flat, decorative columns called pilasters. A one-story addition extends from the left side of the main house.

History of the House and Its Owners

The house was built by a man named Samuel Copeland. He was a skilled toolmaker. Around 1865, he started his own business. It was called the Copeland Hardware Manufacturing Company.

Samuel Copeland was born in Thompson, Connecticut. Before starting his own company, he worked for several other businesses in the area. He was known for inventing the first iron planing machine. This machine helped make metal surfaces smooth.

Copeland owned this house until about 1863. After him, different people lived there. These owners included a druggist, a merchant, and a county treasurer. The Samuel Copeland House is very important because it is one of only two houses in Worcester with this unique temple-front Greek Revival style. The other similar house is the Arad Alexander House.
