Samuel Fischer Scott (1907–1988) was an important African-American educator. He helped start a new school in Norfolk, Virginia. This school was the first part of Norfolk State University, back when it was called the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. Mr. Scott was the very first leader, or director, of this school from 1935 to 1938.

Growing Up in Virginia
Samuel Scott was born in 1907 in Portsmouth, Virginia. This is a city not far from Norfolk. He grew up there and later became a dedicated student.
College Years
He went to Virginia Union University and earned his first college degree in 1931. After that, he continued his studies at the University of Michigan. He received his master's degree from there in 1933.
Career as an Educator
Leading a New School
In the summer of 1935, Mr. Scott visited Virginia Union University. Officials there asked him to lead a new school opening in Norfolk. At that time, he was working as a social worker in New York City. He helped people in need through the Emergency Relief Bureau.
First Director of Norfolk Unit
Mr. Scott accepted the challenge and became the first director of the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. He started this important role in September 1935. He continued to lead the school until the summer of 1938.
Making the School Strong
His main goal was to keep the new school financially stable. He worked hard to make sure it had enough money to operate. He also actively looked for students everywhere. He visited churches, schools, and homes to encourage young people to enroll.
Honors and Legacy
Remembering His Contributions
Years later, people remembered Samuel Scott's important work. In 1984, the leaders of Norfolk State University honored him. They named a new dormitory for men after him. This building helps keep his memory alive on campus.
Doctorate from Virginia Union
In May 1987, Virginia Union University gave him a special award. They gave him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This award recognized his dedication and contributions to education.
