Samuel Foley (1655–1695) was an important religious leader in Ireland. He became a bishop in the Church of Ireland, serving the areas of Down and Connor. He was known for his dedication to his church and his writings.

Who Was Samuel Foley?

Samuel Foley was born in Clonmel, Ireland, on November 25, 1655. His father was also named Samuel Foley. Samuel had a younger brother, Thomas Foley, who later started a famous school called the Old Swinford Hospital.

Samuel's Education and Early Career

Samuel Foley went to school at Kilkenny College. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin, starting in 1672. He was a very good student and became a fellow at the college in 1679.

In 1678, Samuel became a priest in the Church of Ireland. He quickly moved up in his career. In 1689, he became the chancellor of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1691, Samuel Foley earned his D.D. degree from Trinity College. He also became the dean of Achonry and precentor of Killala.

His biggest role came in 1694. He was chosen to be the bishop of Down and Connor. He took over from Thomas Hacket, who had been removed from the position. Sadly, Samuel Foley died shortly after becoming bishop, in May 1695, from a fever. He was buried in Lisburn, Ireland. He was married and had children.

Samuel Foley's Writings

Samuel Foley was not only a religious leader but also a writer. He wrote several important works, including sermons and other religious texts.

  • Two sermons, the first preached in Christ-Church, Dublin, Feb. 19 1681, the other [...] Apr. 24 1682 (London, 1683).
  • A sermon preached at the primary visitation of His Grace Francis Lord Arch-Bishop of Dublin (London, 1683).
  • An Account of the Giant's Causeway published in the Philosophical Transactions for 1694.
  • An Exhortation to the Inhabitants of Down and Connor concerning the Religious Education of their Children (Dublin 1695).

He also left some handwritten notes about the differences between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. These notes are kept at the library of Trinity College, Dublin.
