The Life of Samuel Harris

Early Life and Education

Samuel Harris was born on December 9, 1682. When he was about 12 years old, he started attending Merchant Taylors' School. Later, he went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, which is a college at Cambridge University.

At Peterhouse, he studied hard and earned several degrees. He received his first degree (B.A.) in 1703 and his master's degree (M.A.) in 1707. He was also chosen as a "fellow" of the college, which means he was a senior member involved in teaching and research. In 1701, he was recognized as a "Craven scholar," a special award for excellent students at the university.

Career and Achievements

In 1708, Samuel Harris became a clergyman, which is a leader in the church. He was appointed the rector of a place called Intwood.

His academic career continued to grow. In 1722, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists and scholars in the United Kingdom. Being a fellow means you are recognized for your important contributions to knowledge.

In October 1724, Samuel Harris made history. He was named the first-ever Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. This special professorship was created by King George I in May of that same year. It was a big deal because it meant modern history would be taught as a specific subject at the university.

Samuel Harris passed away on December 21, 1733.

Samuel Harris's Writings

Samuel Harris wrote several important works during his lifetime. His very first lecture as a professor was given in Latin, and it was later printed.

He also wrote a detailed explanation of the 53rd chapter of the Book of Isaiah, which is a part of the Bible. After he died, his wife, Mary, made sure this book was published in 1735. She dedicated the book to Queen Caroline, who was the wife of King George II.
