Samuel Herbert Pearse, F.R.C.I., was a very important Nigerian businessman born on November 20, 1865. He was one of the first Nigerians to own shipping businesses and export goods from the country. He also opened the first hotel in Lagos in 1907. Pearse was a member and secretary of the Lagos branch of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society. This group worked to protect native people and fight against slavery.

Life Story and Business
Samuel Pearse was born in Lagos on November 20, 1865. His father, Reverend Samuel Pearse, worked for the Church Missionary Society. Samuel went to C.M.S. Grammar School, Lagos for his secondary education. He started working as an apprentice in 1883, learning a trade.
Starting His Own Business
In 1888, Samuel Pearse teamed up with I. Thompson, a businessman from Sierra Leone. They began trading goods between Lagos and London. However, their partnership ended in 1894. Pearse then decided to start his own trading business. He worked in Calabar and Lagos. He also became an agent for the African and Gold Coast Trading Company.
Becoming a Successful Trader
Samuel Pearse became very wealthy by trading palm produce from the Old Calabar province. He was one of the first Nigerians to export these goods. Before World War I, he bought a large steamship. This helped him succeed in the shipping market. At that time, the Elder Dempster company mostly controlled shipping in the region. Later, Pearse also started trading rubber in Benin. He also focused more on bringing goods into the country.

One of Samuel Pearse's great-granddaughters is the famous Nollywood actress Joke Silva. She has won many awards for her acting.
