The Samuel Paddock Strong House is a special old building in Vergennes, Vermont. It's located at 94 West Main Street. This house was built a long time ago, in the 1830s, for an important local businessman. It's a great example of a building style called Greek Revival. Because it's so well-preserved, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, you can visit it as the Strong House Inn.

What Does the Strong House Look Like?

The Strong House is found a little southwest of downtown Vergennes. It sits on the northwest side of West Main Street, which is also called Vermont Route 22A.

Main Features of the House

The main part of the house is two and a half stories tall. It has a roof that slopes down to the front. On each side, there are smaller, one-story sections with roofs that slope to the sides.

Building Materials and Style

The house is made of wood and has a stone foundation. Its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The corners of the building have decorative flat columns called pilasters. Around the top of the main part of the house, there's a fancy border with small blocks, called a dentillated entablature.

The front of the house has a triangle-shaped gable at the top. In the middle of this triangle, there's a cool fan-shaped window. The main front door is on the right side. It's set back a bit and has tall, narrow windows (sidelights) and a window above (transom). These windows are framed by more pilasters and a decorative border.

Inside the Strong House

Most of the inside of the house has been updated over the years. However, three of the original fireplaces are still there. One of these fireplaces is made from beautiful black marble found right in the local area.

Who Was Samuel Paddock Strong?

Samuel Paddock Strong bought the land for this house in 1832. He likely built the house soon after that. The way the house was designed was partly inspired by drawings from a famous architect named Asher Benjamin.

Strong's Importance in Vergennes

Samuel Paddock Strong was the grandson of one of the first people to settle in this area. He became a very important person in the community. He was the president of the Bank of Vergennes. He also led the Rutland and Burlington Railroad, which was a big deal for transportation back then.
