Samuel S. Jones (born 1837, died 1923) was an important leader in Provo, Utah. He served as the mayor of Provo from 1898 to 1899. He was also a successful businessman and played a part in the early history of Utah.

Early Life and Journey to Utah

Samuel S. Jones was born in 1837 in Brentford, a town in Middlesex, England. When he was 14 years old, in 1851, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1856, when he was 19, Samuel decided to move to the United States. He traveled across the ocean on a ship called the S.S. Horizon. After arriving in the U.S., he continued his journey west.

He became part of the Martin Handcart Company. These pioneers pulled their belongings in small handcarts all the way to Utah Territory. It was a very difficult journey. Samuel S. Jones finally arrived in Utah in November 1856.

Business and Community Roles

After settling in Utah, Samuel S. Jones became very active in business. He was involved in many different projects. He helped start ZCMI, which was one of the first department stores in the United States. It was a very big and important store at the time.

Samuel also owned parts of several mining companies. These companies dug for valuable minerals in the ground. Besides his business work, he also had a creative side. He wrote a song called "'Tis Utah's Natal Day."

Political Career in Provo

Samuel S. Jones was also involved in local government in Provo. He served several terms on the Provo City Council. The city council is a group of people who make decisions for the city. They help manage things like roads, parks, and public services.

Later, he became the mayor of Provo. He served as mayor from 1898 to 1899. As mayor, he was the main leader of the city. He helped guide Provo during his time in office.

In 1898, Samuel S. Jones also tried to become a member of the Utah State Senate. The State Senate is part of the state government that makes laws for all of Utah. However, he did not win that election.

Samuel S. Jones passed away in 1923, leaving behind a legacy of public service and business success in Utah.
