The Samuel Wyatt House is a special old house located at 7 Church Street in Dover, New Hampshire. It was built in 1835 and is one of the best examples of a building style called Greek Revival architecture in the city. This house was once home to Samuel and Sophia Wyatt, who were important people in their community. In 1982, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's recognized as a very important historical building.

What Makes the Samuel Wyatt House Special?

The Samuel Wyatt House is found near downtown Dover, in an area once known as Tuttle Square. This was a busy business center in the early 1800s. The house stands on the north side of Church Street, where it meets Academy Street.

House Design and Features

The house has two and a half stories and a roof that slopes down from the front. Its outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has three sections, with the main entrance on one side. This entrance has windows on either side and a fan-shaped window above it. A small porch, supported by strong columns, covers the doorway.

Later, a two-story addition was built at the back of the house. In 1938, this part was changed to include a garage in its lower level. Inside the house, you can still see many original features. These include wide wooden floors, special fireplace frames in the Greek Revival style, and old door and window handles.

Who Were Samuel and Sophia Wyatt?

The house was built in 1835 for Samuel Wyatt and his wife, Sophia Cushing Hayes Wyatt. Samuel Wyatt owned several hotels, including one nearby in Dover. Sophia Wyatt was a well-known local teacher and writer.

Both Samuel and Sophia Wyatt cared deeply about making their community better. They were active in a movement called the temperance movement. This movement encouraged people to make choices that would improve their health and well-being. Sophia Wyatt also worked hard to create more learning chances for girls and women during her time.

What Happened to the House Later?

In the late 1990s, the building was changed to be used as office space. However, in 2018, it was changed back into a home, returning to its original purpose.
