San Andrés is a special kind of town area called a municipality in the El Petén region of Guatemala. The main town of San Andrés is located on the northwest side of Lake Petén Itzá. This municipality also includes 55 smaller communities in the countryside. In 2002, about 20,295 people lived here.

San Andrés became a municipality in 1962. It covers a large area of 8,874 square kilometers (about 3,426 square miles). This huge area makes up about 25% of the entire El Petén department!
Protecting Nature in San Andrés
In the 1990s, a big part of San Andrés was set aside to protect nature. More than 93% of the municipality's land, which is about 8,288 square kilometers (3,200 square miles), was declared a protected nature reserve by the government. This means it's a special place where plants and animals are kept safe.
