The Church of San Caprasio

The Church of San Caprasio is an old church located in a town called Santa Cruz de la Serós in Spain. It was built a long time ago in the early 11th century, using a style known as First Romanesque.

History of San Caprasio Church

This church is named after Saint Caprasius, who was a saint from the 4th century. He is connected to the many pilgrims, or religious travelers, who walked the famous Way of Santiago during the Middle Ages. Even though the town of Santa Cruz de la Serós was about 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) away from the main pilgrim route, the church was still important to them.

The church was built in the early 1000s. It was made in a style called Lombard-Romanesque, which means it might have been built with help from artists and builders from northern Italy. In 1089, the local church area, known as the diocese of Jaca, gave the church to a nearby monastery called San Juan de la Peña. For a while, this monastery used San Caprasio as a smaller church or "priorate" that was managed by a prior.

How San Caprasio Church Looks

The Church of San Caprasio has stayed mostly the same since it was built in the 11th century. The only big change was the bell tower, which was added in the 12th century. This bell tower stands a little bit separate from the main church building.

The main part of the church is made of stone. It has one long room, called a nave, with two arched ceilings known as cross vaults. The back part of the church, called the apse, is small and has a rounded ceiling called a barrel vault. The apse also has decorative arches that don't open (called blind arcades) and three windows. Outside the church, you can also see columns and more blind arcades decorating the walls.
