What's in a Name?
The official name of this city can be a bit confusing! Some official sources, like an online encyclopedia from the Mexican government, simply call the city "Mezquital." However, the federal postal service uses the name "San Francisco del Mezquital."
This longer name, "San Francisco del Mezquital," comes from a historical event. It refers to the second religious building (called a convent) that was built in the area a long time ago, during the colonial period. So, both names are used, but "Mezquital" is often used for short.
