San Ignacio de Velasco is an important city in Bolivia. It is the main city of the José Miguel de Velasco Province. It is also the center of the San Ignacio de Velasco Municipality. This city is located in the Santa Cruz Department.

History of San Ignacio de Velasco
The city started as a Jesuit mission. It was founded in 1748. Two Jesuit missionaries, Diego Contreras and Michael Streicher, started it. The mission was home to the Ugaraños people. Some people from another mission, San Ignacio de Zamucos, also moved here. That mission had been left empty in 1745.
People and Population
In 1996, the city had about 12,600 people. San Ignacio is the biggest city in the Velasco area. It is also the largest city between Santa Cruz and the border with Brazil. By 2012, the population grew to over 31,000 people.
Languages Spoken
Most people in San Ignacio speak Camba Spanish every day. This is a local way of speaking Spanish. The most common native language is Ignaciano. This language is a dialect of the Chiquitano language.
Geography and Location
San Ignacio is in the southern part of the Velasco province. You can travel to Santa Cruz by bus. The road is dirt for part of the way. It becomes paved closer to Santa Cruz. You can also take a bus to Cáceres in Brazil. That road is not paved. The city has a small airport with a dirt runway.
San Ignacio is next to a lake called Guapomo. This lake was made by people. It provides fresh water for the city.

Most people in San Ignacio are Camba. This means they are either native people or a mix of native and European heritage. After World War II, some German immigrants moved here. There are also some Mennonite people living in the area.

San Ignacio de Velasco is an important place for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco. This means it is the main city for the Catholic Church in this region.
