San José de las Lajas is an important city in Cuba. It is the capital of the Mayabeque Province. This province was created in 2011 when the old La Habana Province was divided. The city is located in the northern part of the province. A major road called the Carretera Central goes right through it. San José de las Lajas was founded a long time ago, in 1778.

This area includes several smaller towns and villages. Some of these are Jamaica, Tapaste, and San Antonio de las Vegas. The municipality is divided into seven "popular councils." These councils help manage different parts of the city. They include the main town, split into a south and north section, and other areas like Nazareno and Zaragoza.

San José de las Lajas is the most important business center in Mayabeque Province. It has many different industries. These include factories that make metal products, machinery, and electrical items. They also produce building materials, chemicals, and even rum! Besides factories, the area has a very strong farming sector. This means a lot of food and other farm products come from here.

Learning and Science in the City

This city is a hub for learning and science, especially in farming. It is home to the Agrarian University of Havana. This university focuses on agricultural studies. There are also important national science centers here. These include:

  • ICA (Institute of Animal Science)
  • INCA (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences)

Together, these places form what is known as the "Havana East Scientific Pole." They are all about improving farming and animal health through science.

San José de las Lajas has good transportation links.

  • Train Station: There is a railway station that connects to the Havana-Güines line. This line is part of the Havana Suburban Railway system.
  • Major Highways: The Carretera Central highway runs through the middle of the city. Also, the A1 motorway has two exits serving the area.
  • Other Motorways: The southwestern part of the municipality, near San Antonio de las Vegas, is served by the A3 motorway.

Sports in San José de las Lajas

The city is proud of its baseball stadium, called "Nelson Fernández." This stadium used to be the home field for the La Habana baseball team, the Vaqueros (Cowboys). This team even won the national championship in the 2008-2009 season! Since 2011, the stadium has been the home of the new team, the Huracanes de Mayabeque.
