History of San José de los Remates

The town of San José de Boaco used to be called San José de los Remates. It was officially started on March 18, 1848. This happened when José Guerrero, who was a leader in Nicaragua, told families from another area to move and settle here.

Later, on August 6, 1861, a new government leader named General Tomás Martínez officially created the municipality of San José de los Remates. This made it an official local government area.

Local Celebrations

San José de los Remates has two main celebrations each year.

  • The first is on March 19. This day honors their patron saint, Saint Joseph (San José). People celebrate with corridas, which are like Nicaraguan rodeos. There are also parades and fun public parties.
  • The second big holiday is on December 11 and 12. This celebration honors the Virgin of Guadalupe.
