The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (which means Church of San Juan Bautista in English) is a Roman Catholic church. It is dedicated to John the Baptist. You can find it in Vélez-Málaga, a town in the province of Málaga, Spain. This church is an important historical building. Over many years, it has been changed and updated to match the popular building styles of different times.
About This Historic Church
This church is very old! It was first built in 1487. Back then, it was made in a special style called Gothic-Mudejar. This style mixes European Gothic ideas with designs from Islamic art.
How the Church Changed Over Time
The church has been updated many times throughout history:
- 15th Century: Soon after it was built, it got its first remodel.
- 16th Century: Between 1541 and 1564, a bishop named Fray Bernardo Manrique made the church even bigger. He also added the church's tower during this time.
- Baroque Period: Later, during the Baroque period (a fancy and detailed art style), more big changes were made. You can still see parts of these changes today.
- Late 18th Century: Around 1789, the church's sacristy (a room where priests prepare) was decorated. This part is very special and was likely designed by José Martín de Aldehuela.
- 19th Century: The biggest changes happened between 1853 and 1860. Bishop Juan Nepomuceno Castellana oversaw these updates. This is when the church got its Neoclassical look. This style is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman buildings. A lawyer named Federico Vahey helped make these changes happen. He also ordered a special chapel to be built. It is now known as the Cristo de las Vigías.
Inside the Church
To enter the main part of the church, you go through a lobby. This area has beautiful decorations made of stucco (a type of plaster). These decorations show plants and symbols from ancient stories.
