San Lorenzo Xochimanca was an important place in what is now Mexico City. It started as a village long before the Spanish arrived. Later, it became a large farm, known as a hacienda. Today, this area is part of the Colonia del Valle neighborhood. The name Xochimanca comes from the Náhuatl language, which was spoken by the Aztec people. It means "place where flowers are offered."

San Lorenzo Chapel: A Historic Building

The San Lorenzo Chapel, also called the Templo de San Lorenzo Xochimanca, is a very old church. It was built in the 1500s, during the 16th century. This means it has been standing for over 500 years! The chapel is made from strong materials like brick and volcanic stone.

Unique Bell Tower Design

The chapel has a special bell tower. It was built in a style known as "Mixcoac." This style uses bricks that have a unique copper color. The tower stands tall, showing off its historic design.

A National Treasure

Because of its age and importance, the San Lorenzo Chapel was declared a National Monument of Mexico in the 1930s. This means it is a protected historical site. It is a valuable part of Mexico's heritage. For many years, a cemetery was located at the base of the chapel. This cemetery was used until the early 1900s.
