San Miguel de Horcasitas is a town located in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is found right in the middle of the state. The town sits at an elevation of 518 meters, which is about 1,700 feet above sea level. It is part of the San Miguel de Horcasitas Municipality.

How San Miguel de Horcasitas Was Founded
San Miguel de Horcasitas started as a Spanish presidio. A presidio was like a fort or military outpost built by the Spanish. It was named after Juan Francisco de Güemes, 1st Count of Revillagigedo, who was the viceroy of New Spain at the time.
Becoming a Capital City
From 1749 to 1777, San Miguel de Horcasitas was very important. It served as the capital city for the province of Sonora. This meant it was the main center for government and decisions in the region.
From Fort to Town
In 1814, San Miguel de Horcasitas officially became a town, also known as an ayuntamiento. This was one of the very first towns to be established in the state of Sonora.
