About the San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge

This impressive bridge is 2,550 metres (8,366 ft) long. It is a special type of bridge called a cable-stayed bridge. This means it uses strong cables connected to tall towers to hold up the bridge deck. The main part of the bridge is 570 metres (1,870 ft) long. There is also a long approach section, called a viaduct, which is 1,595 metres (5,233 ft) long.

Why Was This Bridge Built?

The bridge is named after Roque González y de Santa Cruz. He was a founder of missions that later grew into the cities of Posadas and Encarnación. The idea for this bridge started in 1977. Argentina and Paraguay made an agreement to build it. It was partly built to help Paraguay. This was because some of its land was flooded by the Yacyretá Dam.

Building This Huge Bridge

Construction of the bridge began in 1981. It was first planned to take about three years to finish. However, it took longer than expected. The bridge was finally completed in 1990. An Italian company named Impregilo led the group that built it.

What Does the Bridge Carry?

The San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge is a road-rail bridge. This means it carries both cars and trains. It is an important route for people and goods. The bridge also carries the Posadas-Encarnacion International Train. This train helps people travel between the two countries.
