San Sebastián is a town and municipality in the Cauca Department, Colombia. It is about 165 kilometers (102 miles) by road from Popayán. Popayán is the capital city of the Cauca Department. Pedro Antonio Gómez founded the town in 1562.

History of San Sebastián
People believe that Pedro Antonio Gómez settled San Sebastián in 1582. But studies show that native people lived here long before that. So, we do not know exactly when the first settlements began.
How San Sebastián is Organized
The Municipality of San Sebastián has a main town, also called San Sebastián. But it is also seen as a corregimiento, which is like a smaller administrative area. The whole area has seven corregimientos. These are then split into 50 veredas, which are like small villages or hamlets.
There is also a special area for the Yanacona indigenous people. They have their own council called Papallaqta in the Valencia corregimiento.

Climate and Weather
San Sebastián has a cool climate because it is high up in the mountains. The weather does not change much throughout the year. It often rains, and the air is usually humid.
