Sanator, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sanator is a small, quiet place located in Custer County, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or a city council, as a town or city would. Instead, the county government takes care of services for Sanator.

The History of Sanator

The community of Sanator began to form around a special hospital. In 1921, a post office was opened in Sanator. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail, and it often helps a community grow. This post office served the people living there for many years, finally closing its doors in 1962.

The name "Sanator" comes from a very important building that was once nearby: the South Dakota Tuberculosis Sanitorium. A sanitorium was a type of hospital where people who were very sick with a specific illness could go to get long-term care and rest. This special hospital was a big part of why the community of Sanator came to be.
